Poverty and income Transfer of Lone-parent Households: Comparing with two-parent households
Kim Jin-Wook

Abstract
Using 2003~2008 Household Survey dataset, this study aims to analyse the trend of poverty, poverty reduction effects of income transfer, and the factors affecting poverty among lone- and two-parents households with dependent children. Major findings are as follows. First, poverty rates of lone-parent households have been much higher than those of two-parents households between 2003 and 2008. Secondly, for lone-parent households, poverty reduction effects of public transfer have increased much whereas those of private transfer have decreased slightly. But, for two-parent households, the function of public transfer has been very restricted so far in terms of poverty reduction effects. Thirdly, Heckman¡¯s two-stage analysis on poverty and poverty gap suggests that factors like sex, employment status, number of children, education level, and income transfer affects the poverty and poverty gap even though there are some differences between lone- and two-parent models. Finally, based on these findings, this article discussed theoretical implication and policy suggestions.
